Sanderson's 6th annual Prickly Pear Pachanga is scheduled for the Columbus Day weekend, October 8, 9 and 10. The Pachanga is Sanderson's festival celebrating its official designation as the Cactus Capitol of Texas. Activities at the festival this year will include the "Cactus Cooking" Contest, craft booths, music, the very popular "Prickly Pear and Pearls" Banquet, Photography Contest, "Biggest and Best Cactus" Contest, kids art contests, games, hundreds of dollars in prizes will be given away.

The fun filled weekend will begin on Friday night with a Pachanga Preview Party. This event will be for the organizers and participants to meet and celebrate the beginning of a wonderful weekend.

There are cash prizes for the Photography contest. All photographs entered must include local cacti or native plants. There is a limit of 3 entries per person. The photographs will be judged on content, composition and appeal. A total of $400.00 will be given away in this event.

The Cactus Cooking Contest is an open contest to any dish that includes cactus as one of its ingredients. These dishes will be judged on visual appeal as well as taste and texture.

The "Prickly Pear and Pearls Banquet" will be held on Saturday night at the St. James Hall. A gourmet meal will be served and prizes will be announced and awarded. Tickets will soon be on sale throughout Sanderson. There will be a limited number of tickets available so be sure to get yours early.The Children's Festival will feature games, prizes, face painting, and contests: the Sidewalk Chalk Art and Poster Contest. The activities for children will be running all day Saturday and on into Sunday as well.

New this year, is a Paganga sponsored poster contest for the Junior and Senior High School students. A prize of $25.00 will go to the artist who best promotes Sanderson as the "Cactus Capitol of Texas". Sheets of poster board will be available at the Fifth Element free of charge for any student wishing to participate. Finished posters can then be dropped off at the Fifth Element where judging will take place on September 25th so that the posters may then be distributed in businesses about town for promoting the festival.

There are quite a variety of artisans that will be show-casing their wares at the Craft Fair this year. There is still a little booth space available, so if you are interested in having a booth at the Pachanga, please call Joyce Ravenwood at 345-3099. Also food vendors or anyone wishing to run a concession during the Pachanga is also asked to call.

With many more events planned, the Pachanga this year is looking to be a happy and exciting event for everyone of any age. Anyone willing to help with some of the events is also asked to call Joyce Ravenwood.
