Centennial Committee seeks housing (10.29.04)

There is a critical need for housing for next year’s Centennial celebration in Sanderson and an appeal will go out soon for room rentals in private homes and other ways to house guests.

Centennial Committee Chairman Marsha Monroe said Monday any Sanderson resident who wants to pick up some spare cash could easily rent out a vacant bedroom to Centennial visitors.

“There are several absentee owners who might also rent out their homes,” she said.

Monroe appeared for the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce.

President Jim Street and Vice President Henry Beth Hogg were the only chamber members present so chamber business was deferred to the November meeting.

But the two discussed the centennial with Monroe and reviewed a final draft of a brochure to be sent to anyone the committee can find who has had any connection with Sanderson in the past.

A committee is compiling a list of names of former residents and their relatives.

“While we would love to have some tourists for economic development, the main focus is on people who have connections to Terrell County,” Monroe said.

The Terrell County School District has agreed to use gymnasium showers for campers during the celebration but the gymnasium cannot be used for housing as some have suggested because of liability issues.

But Superintendent Gary Hamilton said the schools will make classrooms available for class reunions.

“We will have information on our website and the Centennial’s web site when we have the details worked out,” he said.

Hamilton has agreed to head a committee coordinating class reunions as part of the celebration.

“And they might use the High School Auditorium for some events,” he said.

Monroe said churches could also provide facilities such as parsonages and fellowship halls.

And there has been discussion of railroad sleeping cars parked at a siding in Sanderson for the event.

All motel rooms are already booked for the July 4 weekend next year for the four-day event marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Terrell County.

But Mickey Gilmore, owner of Canyons RV Park said he still has vacancies for those who bring their facilities with them.
